Eric- great idea. That's very true and just a different way of looking at it. I love Richard's character, he changes. In the process that need for approval was shown when Ralph Bellamy told him he wasn't like his father. Even though Richard said he was worse. He felt that connection to the older man. It progressed through the story until he had to protect Vivian against his long time "friend" Stuckey. I don't think he really liked Stukey they used each other to a common gain. Then he chose to align himself, CHANGE his goal and build something rather than distroy it. To lay it all on the line and become the man Vivian expected.
Can you tell I love that movie, the plot twists and conficts make it great!
