One more thing and then I'll stop beating this poor horse. Merit badges are a great way to recognize the author, and I suppose that an award-winning entry wouldn't have won without the author's talents.
But it's the story that prompted a judge to select it over others, and thus should (obviously, in my opinion ) have some recognition attached to it.
I knew of the change that CR didn't go down if awardicon items are deleted, and I didn't keep them just because they had an award attached. All the same, thanks for considering my suggestion.
