Folks give gift points for any number of reasons. Some just like to pass on some good will. Some give to thank someone. Others use them as a welcome. I do a combination of the above.

Also, giving gift points in a forum sends you a notice in your email just in case you haven't checked the box at the bottom to be notified when someone replies to you. It's a backup notification for your forum posts.
