“That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” The pilot stared at the commander in confusion. “What’re you talking about? We haven’t landed yet. Anyway, that’s not original.” “I’m just remembering,” said the commander. “We’re about to become the first humans to walk on Mars, and I want say the right thing. Something for the books.” “How about saying whatever comes to mind? It's bound to be a pretty awesome feeling. I'm sure something appropriate will come to you." “Probably so,” said the commander. “But I don’t want to take any chances. The world will be watching.” “Sixty seconds,” said the pilot. “Better think of something.” They checked their harnesses and fixed their eyes on the bank of dials and gauges in front of them. “The longest step ....” said the commander, his voice trailing off to fidget with a control. “Forty seconds,” said the pilot. “How about ‘An even greater step’?” “Sounds too egotistical. Maybe--” “Twenty seconds.” “Maybe ‘One more great step.’ ” “Ten seconds. Nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one, touchdown.” They spend a few minutes pushing buttons to shut down the module. Then they unfastened their harnesses. “Well,” said the commander. “Here goes.” He flipped a switch that popped open the hatch and lowered the ladder. Then he crawled out of the module and began his historic descent. “Another giant leap for -- yeah,” he said. “That could work.” A television monitor on the side of the module captured his every move. Five more rungs to go. Four. Three, .... His foot caught on the first rung and he toppled backward onto the arid Martian soil. “I can’t believe that just happened,” he said to two-hundred million people on Earth. |
