I agree with Beck wholeheartedly. One of the many characteristic themes of steampunk is ecology, and the effects of unrestrained technology on natural resources. This is an area in which some of our more capitalistic folk could use a bit of a reminder. The fact that any area of fiction, whether it be steampunk, fantasy, other SF, or mainstream fare, has the ability to reflect our own reality and display it in another light, or from a different perspective, is what makes it more than simply a means to escape that reality.
