In order to make the experiences feel real for my protagonist, and to maintain credibility, I have to do considerable research.
I spent time, in this case, researching wind turbines - their placement, the way they affect those who live near them, the controversy over them, and listened to the sounds they produce.
I think research is a vital part of prepping for any novel. It enables us to expand our reality - write about what you know - and develop a fully rounded cast of characters.
