Once there was a king who traveled the world and captured all kinds of rare and exotic birds. He placed them in a beautiful glass cage and presented them to his son as a gift. The young prince loved to sit and watch the birds, but he never let them out of the cage. The birds longed to fly to the trees, but every time they tried, they struck the glass and fell to the ground. Over and over they struck the glass, until they were weary and sore. Eventually they no longer dared to fly because they feared striking the glass. After many years, the young prince became king and no longer had time for his pets. He opened the door and said, "Fly free my friends, and soar to the trees of your birth." Confused, the birds sat on the ground, still afraid of the glass, even though the glass was gone.
