Musty, damp air filled my nostrils. Ivy and other plant life climbed the dingy glass windows. Rodents scrambled around the cracked cement floor, away from me...away from danger. My heart was pumping in my chest as my legs spanned across distances that usually took three strides to fill. This adrenaline was the only thing fueling me for the moment. Adrenaline. Fear. The sounds of the approaching danger's claws clacking on the ground. Echoing around the tunnel of glass. Growing ever closer, no matter how hard I pushed myself. No matter how fast I ran. But I kept going. Fighting against the inevitable. Sooner or later...I thought as I turned another bend...I will encounter this monster. We would meet face to face. A shiver ran down my spine at the thought. "Is there no end!?" I exclaimed in frustration, as I turned yet another corner with only more glass windows. More turns. No exit. I was growing tired. Weak. My breath was coming out in short little huffs. I would not make it. I collapsed to the ground in defeat. Burying my head in my arms, I sat and listened. Listened to my greatest fear approaching ever so quickly. I heard it turn the corner. It now had me in plain sight. My fingers dug into my palms. I squeezed my eyes shut tightly. Preparing for the attack. But it never came. I felt the fiend's furry body bristle past and looked up just in time to see the end of his cotton white tail bouncing away. "Whew!" I exclaimed, wiping my brow with the back of my hand. "Close call." |
