I guess I will put in my two cents, which may be of little, if any, help (lol), but I think there are as many ways to reveal and approach a mystery as there are stories. I think the most important thing about a mystery is that you really need to use some sort of foreshadowing. The reader needs to at least be able to look back and say, "Oh yeah! I should have known!", etc. For me, sometimes it is easiest to write the revelation at the ending before anything else, and then work my way backward. It's different with every story, but sometimes I've found that I have no choice.

For me, the biggest thing is that you don't want to give your reader an ending that they could never, ever think might be coming. We don't want to cheat our readers, but we don't want to reveal too much, either... so it is a bit tricky. I like to either work backwards or have a reader whose opinion I trust on hand at all times. *Smile*
