To answer you question about Nanotechnology, Nanites are possible and will be a reality very soon. The problem is not the miniture technology, we have that now. The issue is the battery. Batteries are big, too big to put in little nanites.

This article discusses a team of recearchers that are going to use wireless technology to power the nanites and they are small enough to paddle through the bloodstream.
