Obviously, I don't attempt to have all of the answers to anything in the realm of SteamPunk, but, for me, at least, it is the technology of the era and the "rage against the machine" attitude (and, if that "dates" me as growing up in the 80's heavy metal era... well, maybe that happened.
). But, at any rate, I feel that the technology of the age is of utmost importance. I also think that the underlying theme of most SteamPunk is a little guy overthrowing/overtaking some oppressive regime. In the least, these are two elements I "need" to adhere to the SteamPunk feel.
Interesting thread, though, Boiler Man... and one to which I'd love to hear everyone's response. My NaNo novel this year will be my first attempt at the genre, so your post is well-timed, at least for me. I want to make sure that I adhere to what most feel is important.
