There are several reasons I enjoy SteamPunk. First, I like the blending of re-imagined history with retro-futuristic technology. Second, I think that the genre allows for a very wide range of creative expression that is fun to read and to write. Third, the stories are almost always the sort of fast-paced adventure that I eat up like popcorn.
Last, and perhaps most important, the stories hearken back to the Victorian classics that I so enjoyed growing up. Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, even Lovecraft and Burroughs, and probably a dozen others thatnI can't think of off the top of my head, all helped to shape the way I think about fiction, and contributed to the kind of writer I am.
