I have this to say about steampunk (though it's certainly not the only thing I have to say about the genre): it is a genre of anachronisms. I think if you'd like to emulate it then you might want to read both works in the genre and works that inspired it -- and there are plenty of short stories you can find to fill both of those needs. I'd say to peruse the portfolios of some of the writers here, look up some Victorian literature, and maybe read some published steampunk works.
Also I think most of us are open to personal emails with specific questions regarding our thoughts or our writing if you so choose. At least I know I am.
