Thank you for the answers. I think that makes what I want to do l possible, but let me be more specific. The ideal goal (ideal meaning I'm willing to change it if it won't work): My MC is a political science major, with a focus in contemporary impacts. I don't suspect such a thing actually exists, but that gives you a picture of what I want her knowing/doing/learning. She's also either about to earn her BS, or working on her masters (whichever turns out to be more appropriate). She's a very good student. Like I said, academic scholarships pay most of her tuition. I'd like her to be failing a class. Currently I've chosen history (something with a focus on war/tactical and strategic impacts throughout time). Something where she's technically followed the rules to pass, but the professor has decided to enforce more the spirit of the law than the letter of the law (hence the no grades on coursework idea), and has put new guidelines in place for her to pass. Which in this case include working with the person of his choosing to make sure she knows the material. Something like that. The entire scenario isn't integral to the main plot, but I do have to do some reworking if it's not plausible, and replace it with something else. The ultimate goal is for her to be stuck working with someone she doesn't like but can't walk away from because her grade is dependent on it. In a subject she knows/normally enjoys. So if the above can't get me that, any other thoughts? (this would be so much easier if my college experience extended beyond the fact that I hate navigating the parking lots at the University of Utah during fireworks shows).
