I'm going to agree with Lorien's answer. In my own experience, I would have done the coursework properly if I was interested in the class. Otherwise, I was fabulous at bullshitting my way through assignments and still make it look like I was working, and I knew it. So I probably would have pulled one of those if the course wasn't important to me. In my masters for instance - The classes I took for musicology were ONLY graded on our papers, although we didn't get grades in the traditional sense. Anyway, I spent half the time reading about medieval Catholic history in order to have good background info for one of my classes. It wasn't required, it wasn't even on the reading list. On the other hand in my undergrad geology class, I stopped going altogether in the second half of the semester, never mind doing the work.
