Hi,
I think that even if the characters speak modern English, it would be important to get the name of the language they are supposed to be speaking right. Therefore if you wanted modern Syria, it would be Arabic, and if you wanted Ancient Syria it would probably be one of the semitic languages. A simple internet search (for exampe with key words Ancient Syria language) provides the answer easily and makes the story more credible.
