"Anne of Green Gables", as long as you haven't seen the horrible Canadian movie that was based on it. It's a Classic, if you can handle books written a hundred years ago. It was also a little ahead of its time considering the location, (albeit understated) political perspectives, and its legacy has been extremely impressive.
