Hiya, Starfruit! Although ruwth summed it up pretty well, I would also suggest submitting your work to the newsletters for consideration. I always include submitted items in my NLs (as long as they're rated 18+ or below).
As far as putting your name out there--I try to review/rate those who R&R me, but sometimes life happens and I forget. If that happens to you, give the person a nudge or send out an email request/reminder. I've had many newbies request reviews via email. I like it because they usually ask me to read something specific and tell me what they're looking for in the review (help with spelling, punctuation, and/or grammar, flow and believability, dialogue, etc.). Feel free to ask for what you want. Most members are more than willing to help. Sometimes we just need to be told what it is a fellow member wants help with. That way your reviews are individualized and writer-specific.
