If you are more comfortable with 3rd, then go ahead. One thing to remember, development issues and such can be worked out in rewrites and edits. The first draft is just to get the story down. As some writers would say, "It's okay to suck with a first draft." And it's easier to fix a draft that has problems than a blank page. And the more you write, the more you can develop your skills.
