I know what you mean, Ive just started Straub's "Magic Terror" - that may be his book for the year for me too - but in his second short story in that one he goes into the descriptive and at the end finishes with a speed that would make Superman look like he's stood still.
As for the Semi-ridiculous is it only me or did BooYa' Moon spoil King's "Lisey's Story" or is that just me. I love the book and the prose was sad and melancholy, but I found BooYa' Moon a cop-out, it seemed too artificial and fake, and boy wasn't Lisey and her husband luck that there was a lake there that could cure everything. That in itself opens up dark doorways that weren't explored. Having said that I did love the book.
