Two preivews
by A Non-Existent User
Here's two previews of stories I'm writing. I'm not sure what I'm going to call them yet but tell me what you think of them.

Here's the first.

In a world much like that of medieval Britain there was still such things as dragons, monsters and magic. There was no knowledge of modern technology and electricity wasn’t around. The world was dominated mainly by humans. But there were other sections that were ruled by elves, dwarves, monsters and numerous other creatures. Each had their own part of the world and were reasonable tolerable of each other.
There was one monster who had one goal in life. To be the scariest monster that had ever lived. This would be relatively easy for a monster but he had one problem that would always keep him away from his goal. He wasn’t scary at all. He was only three feet tall with floppy ears and was covered with pink fur. He had no claws and now sharp teeth. He had big beautiful eyes which added to his cuteness.
This monster lived in one of the many great forests of this world. He would try and scare anyone who came in. If he attempted to scare a man all they would do was laugh at him. If it was a woman they would coo over him and tell him how cute he looked. This would really annoy him.
But one day he was sitting in his favourite tree eating acorns when he heard the soft soothing voice of a woman. She seemed to be humming and completely off her guard. He didn’t have time to look at her. He just judged when she was close enough and he jumped out of the tree.
The monster expected to be standing in front of a normal woman. But he could only see the top of her knee. He looked up and up and up to see the head of the woman. She had long beautiful red hair and stunning green eyes. She wore a traditional medieval dress and wore flat shoes. But what was most striking about her was that she was easily 30 feet tall. She just looked down at him and her face lit up. She then squatted down and picked him up.
“Oh aren’t you just the cutest little thing I’ve ever seen,” said the giant woman. “Yes you are. Yes you are.”
“Put me down,” replied the Monster. He attempted to struggle from her hand but she was too strong. His voice was also very high pitch which made her coo over him even more.
“Oh and such a cute little voice as well. I could just eat you up.”
“I am not cute. You must tremble before me for I am the scariest monster that has ever walked the Earth.”
“Oh and he thinks he’s scary.”
“I am scary.” He then held his arms out. “Roar!”
“That’s not scary that’s cute.”
Just then a random hiker walked towards them. At first he didn’t notice the giant woman but when he did he screamed out in terror.
“A giant!” he shouted.
He then ran away and the giant woman stood up.
“No wait,” she replied. But he was already gone and she just crossed her arms. “That keeps happening.” She then uncrossed her arms and looked at the monster once again. “I wish people would stop running away from me.”
“I can’t blame them,” answered the Monster. “You’re a giant. People are going to be scared of you.”
“But I’m just like a regular person just bigger.”
“That reminds me. There aren’t any giants. They’re just things in stories. None of them actually exist.”
“Well I’m not originally a giant. My name’s Mary and I was either fortunate or unfortunate enough to find the wishing well.”
“You mean the things that all those towns have where you chuck a coin down it and make a wish?”
“No I mean “The” Wishing Well. You know the one from the stories?”
“Yeah.”
“Well I was just hiking when I came across a cave that I’d never seen before. Like the dunce I am I decided to take a look inside. When I went inside I saw the wishing well. I knew that it wasn’t any ordinary well. The water inside was very dirty and the bricks were very shiny. I just happen to have a coin in my pocket and I threw it in. I didn’t expect anything to happen. But then the well spoke to me. It told me to make a wish. Its voice was very loud and it made me panic.”
“Then what happened?”
“I just wished that I was taller. I was a little on the short side the well didn’t give me time to think. Then the next thing I know I was back outside and the cave had vanished. I also noticed that I had grown an extra couple of inches. At first everything seemed to be fine at first but a few days later while I was sleeping I had another spurt. But instead of being a few inches I grew up to 10 feet tall.”
“Wow that’s big.”
“It was a big surprise when I woke up. My head went through the ceiling literally. People weren’t too afraid of me then. But when I had another growth spurt to my current height that’s when people really began to freak. They ran away from me in terror. It made me feel like a real monster.”
“Like me.”
“Yes like you. No offence.”
“None at all in fact I take it as a compliment.” He then began to think a little. “You say that this well grants any wish?”
“Yep any wish.”
“Maybe I can wish to be really scary. So where is this well?”
“I don’t know. It travels around. I’m just hoping that I can find it soon before I get any larger.”
“So how do you plan on finding it if it could be anywhere.”
“From this.” She then took out a crystal ball from her pocket. It was regular size. “This thing picks out huge sources of magic so I’m investigating every point where the magic is very high.”
“Must be difficult for you to see.”
“Yes it is. If I get any bigger I won’t be able to see it anymore.”
“Then I have a proposition for you Mary. Since its likely you’ll grow again before you find the well you won’t be able to see the inside of the ball properly right?”
“Right.”
“And since I can still see it clearly and I have reason to seek the well also I suggest that you take me with you.”
“I don’t know.”
“Remember I am the cutest thing you’ve ever seen.”
Mary then gave out a sigh. She looked at the monster again and gave him one more smile.
“Ok then,” said Mary. “But you have to let me stroke and love you as much as I want Ok.”
“Ok.”
“Great but you still haven’t told me your name.”
“We monsters don’t have names.”
“Then can I give you a name?”
“Whatever.”
“How about fluffy? That fits you perfectly.”
“No that’s too cute. I want a name that strikes fear into the hearts of millions and millions.”
“Ok how about the Pinkinator?”
“Still too cute.”
Mary went over several names for the next half an hour. But the monster deemed them all too cute. He was starting to get annoyed. But he didn’t want to shout at her. He thought that if he made her angry then she would leave him where he was and he would never be scary.
“How about Cornelius?” asked Mary.
“Not particularly scary but that’s the best you’ll probably come up with,” replied the Monster.
“Then Cornelius it is.”
“So be it.”
Mary then hugged Cornelius and she then stood up to her full height and walked out of the forest. She was just a little too short to see over the trees. But many branches were going into her face so she had to move the branches to get through. Since she needed both of her hands for this job she had to put Cornelius onto her shoulder. There he was relatively safe.
But after they got to the end of the forest they were in an open field. Mary was glad to be out of the forest. The trees restricted her movement and she felt a little claustrophobic being amongst all of those trees.
But then she felt her stomach growling. This panicked Cornelius. He began to look around because he thought that there was a huge monster lurking somewhere. But he couldn’t see anything.
“Where is it?” he asked.
“Where’s what?”
“The creature making that noise.”
“Noise?” She then realised what he was talking about. “Oh that’s no monster silly. It’s just my stomach.”
“Then cease doing it. It’s very irritating.”
“Well I’ll have to get something to eat so I can do that.” She then looked over the horizon. “And there’s a town over there.”
“You’re going to eat the townspeople?”
“No I would never eat anyone. I’m just going there to get myself some nice normal food.”
“Oh right.”
Mary kept on walking and she got closer to the town. She could hear the people from where she was and she was looking forward to getting a bite to eat. She hadn’t eaten anything decent for a couple of days and it was beginning to show. She just hoped that these people would react better then the last town she went to.
It was getting late as well and it would be dark in a few hours. Mary normally wanted to go to sleep near a populated area. She was afraid in case she’d get attacked by a bear or a wolf. Even though she was too big for them to even attempt any kind of attack on her. It was something she’d always had.
When she did reach town she could see everyone walking around. None of them had noticed her yet. But one random person turned their head and saw her. He quickly screamed in panic and pointed to her.
“It’s a giant!” he shouted. “Everyone run for your lives.”
Everyone then began to run away in panic. Mary realised what was happening and she stepped into the streets. Cornelius was loving the panic and hysteria that was happening. He hoped that one day he could scare people out of their wits just like his giant friend had done.
“No wait everybody I don’t want to…” said Mary. But before she could finish her statement the streets were deserted. “Hurt anyone.”
“Good job Mary,” replied Cornelius. “I’d give it a perfect ten.”
“This isn’t good Cornelius,” replied Mary. “I don’t want to scare anyone. I just want to get something to eat.”
“Then raid a store or something. Maybe even a farm or two. Just get what you need and take it.”
“I can’t do that.”
“And why not?”
“Because it’s not nice.”
“Not nice ha! Listen toots.”
“Don’t call me toots.”
“Ok Mary there’s one law in life and that’s nice guys finish last. If you want to get what you want you’ll have to take it.”
“No I won’t.”
She then walked over to a store that wasn’t too far away from her. She sat down on the ground and knocked on the door. She waited for a few seconds but then a man came to the door. He was shaking like a leaf and he looked up at Mary. He was still in panic and he didn’t move.
“Hi there,” said Mary with an easing smile. “I was just wondering if you had any food for sale?”
“F-food,” replied the Man. “Sure I have plenty of food. Just take it.” He then began to grab food from his store and gave them to Mary.
“Thanks how much will that be,” replied Mary.
“Nothing its free food day,”
“That’s lucky.” She then began to eat the food and the man ran back into his store and closed the door. This had gone unnoticed by Mary and she just sat there eating her food. But Cornelius had noticed and he began to laugh. She then looked at him and was confused. “What?”
“See you did it,” replied Cornelius.
“Did what?”
“You used your size to take food away from that guy.”
“I didn’t take it. He gave it to me. It’s free food day.”
“Oh you are so gullible. The man was terrified. He gave it to you for free because he thought you’d hurt him if he didn’t.”
“I wouldn’t do that.”
“He thought you would.”
“Well I wouldn’t.” She then knocked on the door again and the same man answered. But this time Mary grabbed him with both of her hands and picked him up. He was still terrified. “Look mister you didn’t have to give me the money for free. I wouldn’t have hurt you.”
“Y-you’re scaring me now,” replied the Man.
“I’m sorry if I am. I’m trying to show you that I’m nice.”
“Still scaring me.”
“What can I do to keep you calm?”
“You can start by putting me down.”
“Ok.” Mary then gently put the man back onto the ground. “Now what?”
“Can you leave. Its just that we’ve had a lot of trouble with big things. So everyone’s weary.”
“What big things?”

And here's the second

It was a fairly warm day in Victoria Texas. But unfortunately at this moment in time there a high unemployment rate. Some residents had left the city to find work in other cities in the state but for Jaime Rorschach he couldn’t afford to move from the city. But if he didn’t find work soon he would be chucked onto the streets. He was an African American, in his early 20s and was around 6’3 tall. He was bald but wasn’t too particularly bothered about it. He wore clothes that he had picked up from a charity shop. They were starting to smell since he hadn’t gotten around to cleaning them. It wasn’t because he was a slob or anything like that. He had just been looking everywhere for a job.
He was looking in the wanted ads in the local newspaper. There were a lot of ads for people who had been experienced in those jobs. But Jaime wasn’t experienced in any of them.
But eventually he reached an ad which the job didn’t need any experience. The job wasn’t too particularly high pay but they would give him accommodation, food and clothing. This almost seemed to be too good to be true. But then he looked again and he saw that it was for a travelling carnival. At first he was unsure whether he would try and get the job. But out of desperation he didn’t have much of a choice.
The carnival was located just outside the city and Jaime had to catch a bus to get there. When he got there he could see that they were already packing away. They were going to be moving off very soon. He had to ask a person who was working at a coconut shy game where his boss was.
This led him to a small trailer and he knocked on the door. The door opened and a man with long greasy black hair and a beard opened the door. He was quite short and fairly plump.
“What I’m very busy,” he said.
“I-I’m here for the job,” replied Jaime. He had almost forgotten what he was about to say. But thankfully he had been able to get his words out.
“And your name is?”
“Jaime Rorschach.”
“Ever had a Rorschach test?”
“No.”
“Good I don’t want any loony working here.”
“I’m no loony.”
“Good enough for me. Do you have much here?”
“You mean in Victoria?”
“Yes.”
“No not really.”
“Then come here tomorrow by 9 o’clock. Bring all your belongs here too.”
“You mean I’ve got a job here?”
“If you make it by then yes. But if you’re not here we’ll leave here without you. Now if you excuse me I have to get these documents to Miss Little.”
Jaime then stepped to one side and the man went straight past him. He couldn’t believe that he had just gotten the job that easily. He walked back to the bus stop and the bus took him back home. There he began to pack anything that he wanted to keep. Anything he didn’t want he would leave for whoever would move in afterwards.
He was a little sad to be leaving. But there was nothing for him here. He had to move on with the carnival when the time came.
That next morning he woke up at 7 o’clock so that he could finish everything off. He had packed everything into one suitcase and walked out of the door. He took one last look into his apartment before leaving. He caught a bus to where the carnival was.
Jaime got to the carnival fifteen minutes before they were scheduled to move off. Almost all of it had been packed into several vans and a couple of buses. He went to see the man that hired him. He was just getting onto a bus when he saw Jaime. He was relatively happy to see him.
“Mr. Rorschach you returned,” said the man.
“Yeah just like you said,” replied Jaime. “I have my belongings here.”
“Good now get on. We’re leaving in a minute.”
Jaime quickly got onto the bus with the man and no sooner had he done this it drove away. On the journey to the next location Jaime’s began to explain to him about what his job was going to be. He by no means had an easy job. For most people they wouldn’t be able to bear it. But Jaime was still desperate.
“How do I get paid?” asked Jaime.
“You get paid in cash at the end of every month,” replied the Man. “Everything that you do will be registered. Then at the end of the month we pay you what you’ve earned adding any bonuses or minus any costs.”
“Costs?”
“Well we take away food, clothing accommodations and if you break anything you pay to fix it.”
“So I’m going to get all my money taken off me?”
“No you’ll still keep a large portion of it. When we stop from place to place look around the town a little. Maybe even invest the money. But I must warn you. Stealing here could be very unwise for you. The last guy who got caught stealing someone else’s money he was almost killed.”
“Ok remind me not to steal from anyone.”
“I know you know that stealing’s wrong. But here everyone is close knit if you know what I mean. Most of the people consider their co-workers as family. And if you stay here long enough you might one day.”
“A couple of more things to tell you. This carnival travels in a cycle. We keep going to the same places. It’s a round trip that takes about 2 years. We go through Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma.”
“So I guess that’s not too bad. And where are we going now?”
“Just outside of Texas City.”
“You know I’ve never been there.”
“I’ve been a fair few times.”
“One last thing. What do I call you?”
“Just call me Mr. Smith.”
“Ok then Mr. Smith.”
The bus continued to drive for a long time. Eventually they reached the outskirts of Texas City. All the equipment was being taken off the vans and Lorries. Most of the people were already working to put everything back together. It would only take them around a day to get everything up and ready for the people to come and enjoy themselves. Jaime’s first job here was to help set up the shooting game with another carnie. The guns themselves didn’t have real bullets but only BB bullets.
After a little over an hour of setting up Mr. Smith went over to Jaime. He had a pen and some paper with him and he passed it over to Jaime. At first Jaime wasn’t sure what to do with it.
“Jaime can you fill this out and then take it to Fred?” asked Mr. Smith.
“Sure but where is Fred?” replied Jaime.
“In a trailer by the merry-go-round. You can’t miss it.”
“Yeah sure.”
When Jaime had a couple of minutes he sat down and began to write what needed to be written on the paper. He had to put down some of his personal details and medical details. It took him around fifteen minutes to finish it all off.
When he was finished he went to the merry-ground and like Mr. Smith said, there was a fairly large trailer there. He walked up to the door and knocked on it. He waited for a moment but no one seemed to answer. One thing he did notice however was how high the door was. But he just guessed that it was normal for this kind of trailer.
“Come in,” said a female voice.
Jaime then opened the door and he saw a woman sitting behind a high desk. She had long brown hair and brown eyes. She looked no older then 18 years old and she gave him a pleasant smile. Her teeth were perfectly white.
“Can I help you?” she asked.
“Yes I’m here to see Fred?” replied Jaime. “Is he around?”
“That’s me.”
“You?”
“Yes my name’s Winifred Little.”
“Oh I’m sorry.” He was trying to apologise to her. “When I heard the name Fred I thought you’d be a man.”
“That’s all right. Happens all the time when people first hear my name. Do you have something for me?”
“What?” He then realised that he still had the paper in his hand. He quickly handed it over to her. “Oh yeah.”
“Thanks.” She then put on her reading glasses and looked at the form that had been filled out. “Ok Mr. Rorschach everything seems to be in order here.”
“Oh good.”
“Out of curiosity have you read the Watchmen?”
“No. Do I need to for this job?”
“Fred then giggled. “No it’s just that there’s a character called Rorschach. So I was just wondering if you had read it.”
“No I haven’t.”
“That’s too bad it’s a good book.”
Fred then stood up to put the form onto a shelf. But when she stood up she really stood up. Jaime was having to look up, and up and up at her. She was way too tall to properly stand up in the trailer even though it was a little under 8 feet high. He gasped at her. This hadn’t gone unnoticed by Fred.
“Something wrong?” she asked.
“N-no nothing,” replied Jaime. He was stuttering a little. “Its just that I never expected you to be so tall.”
“Oh that. I’m sorry I should have told you. I’m just so used to being with these guys that I almost forgot how people react when they first see me.”
“If you don’t mind me asking how tall are you?”
“I don’t mind at all. I was 18 last month so that I should be around 8’6 and a half tall and still growing.”
“Wait no one else is that tall.”
“I know you are looking at the tallest person in the world.” She then sat back down on her chair.
“Wait you’re not in the Guinness World Records.”
“I don’t want any fame from my height. I’m just your average run of the mill Texan gal. I’m just taller then everyone else.”
“Oh right.”
“Have a nice day Jaime.”
“Ok.”
Jaime then left the trailer and he wasn’t sure what had just happened. He had just seen the tallest woman he’d ever likely see. He was somewhat speechless. But all he could do was go back to work.
