We weren't doubting that Koontz is a great writer, but he has transgressed - or transpired - to thriller, leaving the horror and paranormal behind him - though at the moment he is rewriting Frankenstein - of which the wife has read the first two, she's a BIG Koontz fan - having started on his newer thrillers first, then I gave her Phantoms, Midnight and Lightning and she was well hooked.
She'd never read any horror novels before and now she devours them like a ravenous beast. I think we have most of Graham Masterton's, T M Wright's, Stephen King's, James Herbert's, Stephen Laws', Richard Laymon's and quite a few more. All of which are awaiting my retirement day so I can get cracking - because time is slipping through my hands at the moment.
I've read the "Beast" saga of Laymon's - even a short story printed by a specialty press. I would recommend him to anyone. Though I wouldn't place them on my top ten must read books I would say they were well paced, kept my attention and at times had me on the edge of my seat.
