Seeing as we're going for the whole Un-hero thing i think it's actually preferable to stay as human as possible and imagine that instead. The limit on blood was actually trying to limit the whole your character's magic rather than encourage it, so no worries about rthat. I mean... it's complicated enough with the world around them being magic. So you don't have to make em an old hag or anything.

You could explore options with relations, maybe betrothals,

as for position? we have a pretty free reign with the woman because noone really knows, although i believe since the men had to move around so much they would have had to be pretty fierce out of neccesity to protect their families. they probably would have had to get the food etc. too and take up extra duties. When the men returned the social structure probably would have changed again.

Perhaps a history of women being selected as shieldbearers from their family? Only daughter of a chief? Priestess? Assistant to a druid? Due to be sacrificed?
