Oooohhh - them there's fightin' words, Lassie (sorry got carried away with speak like a pirate day yesterday) I'll try and tone it down. Now I have to come out on the side of Mr Koontz here, granted there are some duff novels out there, that he's written, but that goes for many writers doesn't it, even the much used Mr King ( I mean Rose Madder & The Eyes of The Dragon - please ). The thing with Mr Koontz is that he is probably one of the most prolific writers, where shear output is concerned. He's been writing since he was very young and never stopped - and in print from 23 years old, not too shabby. Unfortunately, they've started to re-release his older work & some of his back catalogue that previously never made it into print. I will say that after reading a couple of these, I was a little disappointed. I will say I avidly read Lightning - which had good characters and a good twist - and a pace that put you on the edge of your seat. Next came Phantoms, that put shivers up my spine all the while I was reading it. Midnight did the same. Then I read Twilight Eyes and WOW, I thought it was so good I forced it onto my best friend - who sat rigidly on my bed and devoured the book in one sitting, I kept him fed with sandwiches & a hot meal, Sometime around three in the morning he stumbled off to his home, with the book in his hand - he read it twice more before I got it back the following week - I read it again, then. The book now looks very thumbed, but I think I'll dig it out and have another peruse it's been over 15 years. And need I mention Bad Seed, Chase, Shattered, Night Chills (really loved that one) and Watchers (the movies never got it quite right). Out of all of them my favourite Koontz novel has to be Strangers - mainly for the characters, the build up, the telling itself, and the twists and turns it takes the reader through. This would make it into my Top 10 Novels (though not necessarily a Horror book it is definitely worth the read.) I would be very interested in knowing the Koontz books you've read because I've got to catch up, I've not had the time to devout to reading as I once had if they're some of his newer ones I may decide to miss them, until I retire and I can sit on the patio in my factor 4000ph suncream, drinking my ever-hot coffee from it's cooling mug (that stops it from turning into steam and read all the books I haven't had the chance to do yet. - Ahhhh bliss. Come join me - We ALL float down here. Pennywise. |
