On Writing (Stephen Eugenides)
There is a link to an interview between Oprah and and author Stephen Eugenedes who recieived the Pulitzer Prize for his novel Middlesex. (See below). I was interested in what he had to say about receiving the award.

"...winning a prize like the Pulitzer changes your life not at all. The daily act of writing remains as demanding and maddening as it was before, and the pleasure you get from writing - rare but profound-remains at the true heart of the enterprise. On their best days, writers all over the world are winning Pulitzers, all alone in their studios, with no one watching. The grail remains interior.'

I am heartened to find quotes like this. I consider writing to be a lonely process requiring discipline and faith, only occasionally rewarded by "aha" moments when the words on the page surprise the writer with their elegance. That's why I write primarily for myself. It's the "aha" moments that keep me going inspite of the fact that I may never be published.
