I don't know that you can effectively argue your beliefs until you can put yourself into the other side's shoes - at least enough to understand the basis of their conflicting beliefs and refute them. To that extent, I can easily write characters I disagree with. I wouldn't write something that "glorifies" rape or war - but I think I could write a convincing rapist or soldier, and make them just sympathetic enough you'd continue reading.
Think...Hannibal Lecter. Hard to really HATE the man, despite the fact that he's completely looney toons and a serial murderer and cannibal. He's such a...gentleman.
You can't write a villain who's at all entertaining to read about if he's 100% EVIL. Nor is a protagonist who's 100% perfect interesting to read about.
