Not just research and speculation, Lori, but empathy. We don't need to experience EXACTLY what our characters do in order to extrapolate and feel the emotions we ascribe to them. But without empathy, it's all superficial and feels like fiction. With empathy, there's a risk of readers mistaking our characters for US.
