I write about my life all the time. I hardly ever just create stories from scratch. I don't think I have quite the problem that you do, though. I change the names and have no problem changing details to suit the story. That way you can make your stories better than real life.
I'm just beginning to write a story based on my family during the time my father was slipping into dementia. I'm having trouble with some of the details because some of the things that really happened were too bizarre to write about in a way I think will be believable.
I don't know what to suggest though. Maybe write about things that are from long enough ago that you have more distance from them. Or maybe just do what you are doing and get it right in the rewrite. We all have to rewrite for one reason or another.
I'm going to check out your contest.
