Writer's Fallout Shelter

I know lots of people who indicate they do such things unintentionally. I know others who say that such things are always done unintentionally and that any writer who says they planned such things are not telling the truth. I do think they can be done deliberately, but I also think that they just happen, too.

I'm curious about your use of the word "message," though, do you see layers as being the same thing as a having a meaning, beyond just the story, to your work? Can you have layers without having a greater message imbedded in the text?
