Marcia, Sure, I will link one of my layered stories. It may not be a perfect example, but it's worth a read.
This story started out as a free write one night when I was bored. I did something that Stephen King suggests in his book "On Writing"; I put a character into a situation and wrote him out of it. I had no idea what the plot line was going to be ahead of time. I just put this character into a dark room, gave him a fun voice to work with, and wrote away. I just wrote...with no intentions or ideas. I just went with the flow. Before I knew it, I had a 4,000 word story. When I looked back on what I had written, I had found some opinions and ideas of mine embedded into the plot. Some were more obvious, some were not. On the surface, it is just a story about an unspectacular man thrown into a spectacular situation. But underneath, the story is really a statement of my opinion on several literary things: hackneyed plots, excessive foreshadowing, plot devices, use of cliches, lack of explanation, etc. Again, it wasn't something I set out to say. But it is a consistent theme that exists as another layer of the story. So this is an example of my unintentional layering. This layer may not be that hidden, but it is another layer nonetheless. I just think it is weird that I didn't notice myself applying it throughout the entire story. |
