A sanctuary for weary writers, inky wretches, and aspiring professional novelists. |
I don't put anything I want to publish on WDC because as Lori and Emeral said some publishers would consider work posted here as published. Legally it is and in posting here first you give WDC non-exclusive first publication rights. Whenever we sell our stories/books we're selling the rights to reproduce and most publishers want to buy first rights or all rights. Publishers do take into account critique however so you can publish here with a passkey so long as you restrict your readers to a specific handful. A very select and limited audience with the intention of using their feedback to revise your manuscript. I think even restricting to Registered Authors wouldn't be enough since the site is free to join and has thousands of members, it doesn't seem restrictive enough although you could probably count on your views to remain moderately low so perhaps that's a way around it. Having said that, many authors will post free tasters, the first one, two or three chapters of their books to entice readers and to showcase their writing to help the reader decide if they want to read the rest of that book or other books by that author. Either way, as Lori said, we all live and learn and this isn't your ownly idea. You might even decide to go the self published route for this book or never find the right publisher. You're already working on the next one. I recommend reading up about copyright. There is a great link on WDC about it. Just a sec, I'll hunt it down.
This is another great one:
