Outside of writing.com, individuals have made statements like this to me after I have critiqued something they've written. In that context, the meaning comes across as since the writer wrote it that way, the reader should be willing, or have no choice, but to suspend their disbelief. I realize that in these instances, it is more of a defensive reaction.
I'm not certain if the writers didn't know where they were going or if they didn't want to admit they did not know how to get there. It is also possible that something else was going on. If anyone has any theories about what that "something else" might be, I'd like to hear them.
