More often than not, our family and friends are not good readers. They miss the themes and subtleties that seperate good writing from ordinary. It's not their fault, really, they just don't often have a chance to read more than the Sunday paper.
On the other hand, even when your father is a famous writer and your mother literature professor, they will tend to look for good things to say because they honestly want nothing more than to encourage you to keep improving.
Either way, family and friends tend to be unreliable critics. Either they don't want to be honest, or they don't know how to be.
That's been my experience anyway. Your mileage may vary.
