I probably wouldn't judge his decision so much on weight, but more on how much he will need the saddle when he gets the horse back. Does he need it for riding or not? If he doesn't, and he's willing to sacrifice the comfort of a pillow, then he would probably leace it no matter what its weight, because it would be a hassle while trying to recover the horse. But, if that's the case, why would he have had a saddle at all? I don't really think weight is as big as a factor, more important is its all around usefulness.
