A member of my writing group tells of a novel she once started writing. After making significant progress, she laid it aside. When she returned to it after an extended period, she started to edit and rewrite it. By the time she was finished, she had a salable piece of flash fiction.
Whether you choose to whittle the work down later or expand it and become a novelist, I think you're in good company.
