Joe, I really doubt there are that many "bad" prologues. I think a few people happen to come across one or two that really didn't contribute much to the story. Those same people gripe on message boards and in writing circles, and before you know it, a whole lot of people are on the anti-intro/prologue wagon.

Terry Brooks catches flack from time to time for writing weak stories or knock offs of LoTR. I happen to like his style agreat deal, and don't want to start a debate regarding his talent. But I'll say this: The guy is a master of the prologue. He understands its value and he works it like few others.
