I normally read the prologue, it's basically a first chapter that happens just before the timeline of the story starts but is related to it. If you're unsure don't put in things that are important, just things that give insight into the following story. It's the same with an epilogue. It either acts to make readers go "ahhhhh, I get it" about something or act as a prologue to any sequel you care to write.
