Al, what you are describing isn't an editor, but a writing or critique partner, someone who beta reads your work and lets you know what didn't make it out of your head and onto the page and you double-checks your work for you before sending it out.

I'm talking about the job of the editor after something is submitted. When you submit your work to a publication or a publisher, what responsibilities do you think the editor has regarding your work? What do you know about that process?
