I tried writing my novel without some sort of outline, and floundered. I need to know where my story is going. To avoid restricting myself, however, I have a very general outline with main plot points, and then I storyboard a few chapters ahead. The storyboard is a lot more specific with what I want to happen in each scene. That gives me a light so I can see the path directly before me, but not a map of all the twists and turns. Knowing what I want to happen in the current chapter gives me confidence to write it, but I still feel comfortable veering from it if that's where the story takes me.
