Some writers swear by the out of sight, out of mind principle. If you can't be right there working on your story or novel, don't even bother thinking about it. In fact, avoid thinking about it, let your mind be busied by other things. Only let yourself deliberate on what that red dress means in chapter five when you've got the time to write chapter six. No wasted ideas, that way.
