I find that if I let my mind wander too far from what I'm currently working on, I'll get too excited by the shiny new idea that seems so much better than my old, crummy idea, and abandon the piece I'm working on for the new one. Thus, I try to stifle all outside ideas long enough to finish one piece before moving on to the next.
Unfortunately, most of my ideas are only half-formed when I start, so I always get stuck in the middle, necessitating a break. It sometimes takes me weeks or even months to figure out where I'm going, which sucks when it comes to short stories, because I have so little finished product to show for so much wasted time.
