The thing about generalities is they're always wrong.
What if the DEM ending would be humorous, and that is the author's intent? Or if it made a bold statement? Or if the author simply wanted to illustrate the smallness and uselessness of all of man's efforts? Never is still an awfully strong word, especially considering the rich diversity of writing styles out there.
