Fear of rejection is common and there are many tricks to dealing with it, from having someone else mail your work out for you to just taking a deep breath and moving forward. Getting the first rejection really is a milestone in a writer's life.
As for why something gets rejected. Repeat after me: It's not personal. They are not rejecting you. The work is not yourself. The publisher and editors don't even know you. There are many reasons for a work to be rejected that has absolutely nothing to do with either the quality of the work or the author as a person.
