I've got my group of vampyric friends where I know I can consentually bite them. It's pleasuring, makes me feel better, and gets me to not talk so much. I guess it isn't the same as biting yourself. It's more of the psychological reason behind it than what you're actually doing. I don't know if I'm making too much since, but basically, if you're breaking the skin, like bleeding or peeling off some noticible layers, or if you're ending up with bruises that don't fade within a few hours, then it's probably not good.
But if it's comforting you, there's no bruising, or breaking of the skin, and the teeth marks go away after about 3 to 4 hours, then you should see it as a step away from serious self-injury where there bruising and breaking of the skin. Going cold-turkey on self-injury is very hard, so taking steps down away from it, like snapping rubber bands, holding ice cubes tightly, or lightly biting, can be seen as helpful steps to recovery.
