I see the Harry Potter books as a serial metaphor for growing up, and all the dreams and agonies therein. In fact, a great many of the books I’ve read are actually metaphors for experiences that might otherwise be considered ordinary. It’s always been my opinion that the advice “write what you know,” is often taken too literally. Even considering only the most commonplace experiences, given our unique perspectives and a little imagination, what we “know” can fill volumes.
