I think the key to a successful campfire is to select the right people to join in the first place, plus a moderator who stays on top of it, intervening as necessary to keep things moving. I haven't been involved with a campfire where those elements were in place, which is why I'm very hesitant to join new ones, I'm still sitting around the cold stones of the ones I've joined in the past, lol...
