OT: When is complicated story to much or to simple?

My names JOsh Raxter ive been on writing.com seems like forever, and ive been working on this one story for years. But im afraid that its too complicated for the masses, but i dont want to dumb it down cause then it wont be the story i created. have any of you had to risk lossing your story just so more people will not get overwelmed?
