I hate to be difficult *bitsmile*, but for the sake of debate may I point out that the definition of "viable" is the capacity to exist and survive. I would argue that the fact that we are discussing prose poems makes them very viable.
I think they are very fun to write and read because so many have wonderful fantasy elements in them. I feel like I should stand up for them a little bit, especially since it was my choice of form the last time we slammed and I got to be a guest judge. Hehehe...
