My advise for writing free verse is to choose strong words as much as possible. When you add a conjunction or a preposition (weak words--or an article...filler), make sure they are necessary and the right one. It's more a feel than anything else.
And LeeAnn, I love writing forms (even given that of the three rounds I've entered, two I entered with free verse and in the third we had to use a specific form)--trying to fit my idea into the frame of another's pattern without losing meaning or image.
If that's the poetry that you like to write, there's nothing wrong with writing it. Don't feel like you have to give up rhyming because you're the only one who is using it at the moment. After all, that may change dramatically next round.
