Seems a good time to share, again, the advice of Tom Clancy to aspiring novelists - "Just write the damned book."
I mean, really, it IS subjective.
I would say that to break the rules, you first must understand what the rules are - that is, the rules of "standard" spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Nothing worse than a sloppy, inept writer arguing "There are no rules! This is my art! Love me unconditionally or - well, YOU'RE not the person I was writing for, so NYAH!!" But if a master carpenter prefers to hold his hammer in an odd way, and still produces a stunning cabinet, who's to say he's "wrong"?
At some point, worrying too much about how to write the perfect book will keep you from writing anything at all. So just let it go - do your best - keep practicing.
